Junior Adekunle: Evaluation

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

1. This scene from the music video 2pac-Ghetto Gospel is used to emphasize the representation of poverty in this video. The woman is dressed in a plain black t-shirt and because of this she is represented as poor because if she was rich she would not be wearing this type of attire. It is also very noticeable that the woman is not wearing any make-up which again could suggest that she is poor because most women apply make-up before they go out and this shows that she may not been able to afford make-up. She is also carrying a trolley full of black bags this shows poverty because these are not the things that people purchase from their local shops and this could show that she is poor and is taking bags because she is looking for things to survive on such as food etc. This was very influential in our music video because it was a very accurate portrayal of poverty and this is something that we wanted to do in our music video.

2. This scene is set in a very desolate and barren area to show the poverty of the character because if the character was a very rich person they would be living in a more lavish and suburban area with much more around it rather than a area that the character is currently being shown in. The buildings in the area seem to be broken and distorted to show the fact that it might not only be the character that is poor but the whole area is full of poverty and this can create an enigma code as the audience will wonder how the whole area has turned into this state.

3. The high angle shot in this scene is used to show the vulnerability of the character represented in the scene. This shot is able to create an enigma code because the audience is going to wonder why the character is so vulnerable and whether this is linked to the poverty earlier shown in the video and this can also reinforce the idea that the character is in this poor and disadvantaged position because of the poverty that seems to swamp the area.

4. The characters are set in a rich setting as the house behind them looks very upmarket and something that rich people would want to live in this is because it is very lavish. The characters can be seen to be rich as they are set in front of the house with a multi-thousand dollar car which shows that the characters are very rich and have very luxury lifestyles. This influenced our own music video because we wanted to represent the feeling of wealth as our video is an R&B video and this normally consists in most videos.

5. The characters are dressed in very fashion current styles which show that they are very wealthy. They are dressed in nice clothes that most R&B artists wear today they are also surrounded by woman dressed in expensive dresses and high heels and this all adds to the sense of wealth seen in this music video.

6. The high angle shot used in this ,the music video for the song Chris Brown-Ayo, is used to show the power of the rapper because he is lying on a gold bed surrounded by a pool of money this is to show how wealthy the rapper is. It is also shows that the rapper is very powerful as if you have a lot of money then you also have a lot of money.

1. The character is being shown as poor in this scene for our music video no apologies as like in our influential music video Ghetto Gospel the character is shown as taking black bags to survive on for essential things such as food etc. We feel that this adds to the sense of poverty in our music video and we feel because this was represented very well in our influential music video it would also be very well represented in our own music video. The character is also dressed in ripped clothing to emphasize the fact that he is poor and may not have any money to buy new clothes. This just like in our influential music video emphasizes the genre of poverty.

2. The character in this scene is shown in a very barren area just like in our influential music video this adds an enigma code to our music video just like it did in our influential music video because it makes the audience wonder whether it is just the character that is poor or whether the whole area is swamped in poverty. Just like our influential music video we feel that because of this the feeling of poverty is presented clearly and effectively.

3. The camerawork in this scene is a high angle shot to show the character is vulnerable this like our influential music video shows that the character is in a vulnerable position and this will create an enigma code in our video because the audience will want to know our character’s background and how he has come to be in the vulnerable position he is in know.

4. The character like in our influential music video is shot in front of an expensive car which will show that the character has a lavish life style and is pictured in a very posh and lavish area which again like in the influential music video that shows the rapper is very wealthy which is common in most R&B videos.

5. The character in this seen is shot with a low angle shot to show his power the rapper is at on a very expensive car again to show the fact that when you are wealthy, power is also comes when you have a lot of money. The character is sat on the car to show the fact that he is wealthy enough to sit on the car because the car to the rapper is just another car.

6. The character in this scene just like in our influential music video is dressed in fashion forward clothing to show that he has a vast amount of wealth and the clothes he is wearing is what rich people would wear.

Planning- Costume and Props

For our music video our character is seen as moving from being a poor homeless man to becoming a wealth young musician who gets discovered by chance.

1st Half- Poverty

for the first half of our music video we are going to show the character as a poor homeless character and we really want to emphasize this in the clothing that we are going to dress our character in. the character will be dressed in a smart black shirt that will be ripped in multiple places, beige shorts with a hole in them and then smart black school shoes which are ripped also. we believe this outfit will show the character as someone who is poor and has nothing in life.

although we wanted to show the characters poverty we also wanted to make sure that the character was fashion forward and was wearing clothes that our target audience would normally wear we felt by having the character dressed in items from many fashion forward outfits he would link well with our target audience and by adding the rips and holes into the clothing we are able to emphasise just how poor the character is.

2nd Half- Wealthy
In the 2nd half of our music video we want our character to be represented as a wealthy character as he has just been discovered by a major record label in Sony Entertainment and we feel this was a chance to dress the character in what our target audience would like to wear and this in turn helped us dress him in fashion forward clothing that not only R and B and rap artists would wear today but an outfit that our target audience can identify with.

For the 2nd half we have decided to dress the character in a Ralph Lauren shirt, a black majestic jacket, black Sony headphones, black jeans and white Adidas hi-tops we believe that this outfit allows our character to meet the wealth young male stereotype but also helps connect with our target audience as this is something most of them would wear.

this outfit fits perfectly with the conventions of what our target audience would wear and also fits in with the tag of being wealth so as a group i think we have found the right mix of outfits for our music video.

Planning- Costume and Props (Research)

Over the years R&B music videos have had ever changing costumes and these have changed a lot over time and we are going to try and represent this in our own music video.

1940's- 1970's

In the 1940's music was mostly about the soft sounding Jazz Sound and as shown by music artist Duke Ellington the style used for music in those days was a very smart style and suits were worn by most of the big music artists in the 1940's, this style continued into the 1970's as Jazz was the dominant genre of music for these decades. Artists such as Elvis Presley and Marvin Gaye are the only artists who really challenged these conventions as they regularly wore suites but put their own variations on it, for example Elvis Presley had a sparkles put on his suit and did not wear a shirt but just a blazer with sparkling sequins and this made him a unique artist one that was different to the rest of them,

1980's

in the 1980's the music that was available to the public became more and more diverse with the introductions of artists such as Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson who's music was a different type of style than that of which was listened to in the 1940's through to the 1970's. the style in this era was a lot less smart and there was more flair and eccentricity to the outfits that musicians wore in this era of music. Below is Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston, Jackson is rocking a red leather jacket and wearing smart black jeans and shoes so he is not completely deserting the smart style set by the artists before him, but he has put his own revolution  on it which made him one of the most fashion forward R&B artists of his time.  Whitney is pictured wearing a more male type of clothing as she is rocking her own leather jacket with a white shirt and scarf.

1990's

There were a lot of r and b music artists such as LL cool J and R Kelly and they both challenged the fashion conventions set by previous artists. Artists such as LL cool J and R Kelly placed more emphasis on the wealth that they had and this was reflected in what they wore and as you can see below both were wearing a lot of jewellery to show of their wealth and this a theme that is still followed in today's music.

2000's
The music that has dominated most of this era is R&B and Rap music and the artists had much more fashion forward outfits. Below are 50 Cent and Jay-Z s s and the outfits they have chosen to wear has emphasizes the wealth that they have but these outfits also represent their backgrounds as these are the outfits worn on the streets where both artists grew up in and this is why both artists are seen as representations of the Gangster Lifestyle.

For our Music Video we have been influenced by the style of all the decades and so the scenes in our music video will show our character not only representing the Gangster Lifestyle and showing off his wealth but we will also show the smart variations set by artists such as Duke Ellington.

Planning- Treatment Pitch (Empire- No Apologies)

Overview

For our track "no apologies" we want to challenge ourselves to go to the extra mile and test the boundaries of the music video medium. let's create an  unbelievable, thrilling short film that is simultaneously a sleek hip hop and R'n'B video. In our video, we have motivation behind each and every one of our shots and camera techniques. By telling a high concept story about poverty and fame, we are able to include many different shots and angles, we are able to surprise and entertain the audience, and it enables us to w eave a heartfelt story of poverty to fame into it all.

"empire" the TV series, which we acquired our song choice from, is a story about a family who own a big recording label and each member of the family desires for power. but it is not a normal representation of this and creative things are done. power is simply our archetypal framing device. like the empire TV series. we aim to entertain audiences, make them feel connected with the music video, and make them want to watch it again and again. we'll shoot our film in two locations both being London, in the rich parts such as oxford circus. and the other being Gillingham, in the poor parts such as the Gillingham market, these two location will serves as the basis for our character's adventures.

We have two characters playing exactly the same role but one character has an added role. Both characters will be poor in the beginning of the music video and only one character will be introduced to the audience at the beginning. the performance element of the video will be intercut within the main story of the music video. in addition, there will be parts where will the story is being shown the performance scenes will entwined within it. The character will be dressed in ripped clothing and will be shown struggling to live by trying to pick pocket, living on the street, etc. this will create a production that will play to our song's strengths in terms of its meaning, as is not only something that will captivate the audience, but its a very serious subject being portrayed as well.

Story

Too often, music videos have half a story, or become a pastiche of stories that we've seen a million times. But "Empire-No Apologies, will be a unique music video with a captivating finish that can stand all on its own.

Our lead character is shown laying on the road in the heap being glared out by people passing by. He will shown trying to pickpocket money to buy food and we will cue the music when he runs away from the people he is trying to steal from. He barricades himself in an ally where he discovers a guitar left on its own that looks brand new. As the music continues, we will show curiosity coming on the character as he decided whether to take the guitar. As, the owner runs into the ally we will show the character again running from danger.  We will then show the character beaten and battered singing to himself.
