Analysis of original music video (Empire Cast- No Apologies)

Representation and mise-en-scene

In this music video for the song Empire- No Apologies, the rapper in the film is always filmed from the same side so this shows a weakness in their music video as their is a lack of creativity in the camerawork and this can make the video boring for the audience who are watching it. The camera quality is of a very high standard and this is and advantage because it gives a clear picture of where the performance is set. The camerawork throughout the music video does not show the audience this is a disadvantage for this music video because the viewer will not be able to tell whether this is a performance in front of many or a rehearsal for a performance in the club later that day. The camerawork here also shows the bridge and the surroundings and by the way they have done it shows that the club is a very wealthy one as the bridge shows how unique the club is as most clubs do not have this kind of set up. As I am the director for my music video I am going to try and vary the camera angles that we are going to use in my music video as the lack of varied angles in this music video makes the video

the rapper Hakeem says the words 'diamonds on my necklace' and lifts up his necklace this is to show that the rapper is very 'wealthy' the chain is also very big which can suggest that there is a lot of gold in the chain which makes it big and heavy. Also in this scene Hakeem says the words guess that's what i'm blessed with' this is again to show his wealth and to emphasize the fact that he has not had to work to get the all the wealth that he has he got it through inheritance and also through this lyric stresses the importance of his family's lineage. Another lyric uses is 'I eat you for breakfast' the rapper uses this line to stress the fact that due to his wealth and importance he is better than everyone else and that you shouldn't try to challenge him in anyway as he is the 'man ' around here. As the director and producer of my music video I am going to make sure that each part of the music video has relevance to the lyrics of the song we are going to use but I would want do this in creative ways for example, when he says 'diamonds' I will show the character in our music video as being poor as i believe this will give the words new meaning, by doing this I believe our music video will become more appealing to our audience as it would be a different way to represent otherwise generic and boring lyrics a s most rappers talk about how rich they are and flaunt this wealth in there music videos whereas I want to put a spin on this and show the characters poverty instead.
The characters Hakeem and Jamal are shown to represent two different social classes in the scene and this can be represented in the way both of them are dressed Hakeem is dressed in a patterned smart shirt with black leather pants and a big gold chain around his neck which is to show how wealthy and powerful he is Jamal is dressed in a plain t-shirt and black jeans which is to show he is not as wealthy or as powerful as Hakeem and is by his outfit is shown as inferior. Hakeem is a again shown as the dominant artist in this song because he is placed center stage with all the lights firmly on him establishing him as the star of this music video. As the director for my music video I am going to make sure that the character in our movie is clearly represented so that it is clear he is the star of the show I also want to show poverty and wealth and this will be shown clearly through what he is wearing but also through the locations we are going to use when we are shooting our music video.

In this scene there is a small shot of a part of the audience with drinks behind them this gives a sense of the location of where the music video is located. the setup of the club is very well set out and again the rapper is the middle again showing his stardom and how he should be front and center in this kind of place.
