We showed our class one of our influential videos to see what they thought of them and these were the main things they picked up from the song and what they thought went well and what they thought we could take from this video and put into our own video to make it better each point on the list we have taken into consideration and feel because of this feedback our music video a lot better and make sure that the video we make adheres to the needs of our target audience.
- Focus more on the story line no performance
The class thought that one of the things that this music video did well is that it focused on the meaning of the song and because of this they felt they were able to not only connect to the video but they are also able to understand what the song is about. We have a group decided that even though we will have performance that our video also focuses on the meaning of the song as this means the audience can connect with the song more no matter its genre.
- No lip syncing
The class also picked up on the fact that the video had no lip syncing and they felt this made the video a little bit more professional as the class felt that if there was lip syncing in the video they would not be able to connect with the song the way they did, We as a group have considered this feedback and we want to make sure that even though our video involves lip syncing that we use it in inventive ways so that the audience is still able to connect with the song. We also want to make sure that we make the video professional and we will endeavor to make sure that the lip syncing is edited to perfection.
- Circular narrative because it starts with the ending and ends with the same ending
The class liked that our influential video started and ended with the same thing, they thought that this was effective because they believe that starting with the guy on the floor dead you are able to grip the audiences attention straight from the beginning and it makes them eager to find out what happened to the person so the class basically believe that enigma's in music videos can work very well if they are performed in the right way. We as a group decided to insert some kind of enigma to our video so that it grips the attention of the audience from the first second to the last we feel that if we do this we will have a successful video as the class said they liked this about our influential video.
- Textual graphics on screen
The class also liked the fact that the video included textual graphics as it aided them in understanding the story portrayed in the music video. In our own product we shall look to make sure that we include graphics of some kind they may not textual but graphics that will help the audience in understanding the story.
- Felt like a TV drama at the start
The class felt that due to the enigma of the dead person at the beginning the music video resembled that of a TV drama such as Eastenders or Hollyoaks and they felt this was a disadvantage of the music video as they wanted to feel that it was a music video straight from the beginning. we as a group wanted to make sure that as a group we make sure that the audience recognize that it is a music video straight away from the beginning we will try to do this by following the conventions of traditional music videos.
- You felt close to the action
The class felt that because the camerawork was always so close to the action the audience felt very close to the action and felt the emotion of each character and felt like they connect to the song. In our music video we are going to make sure to add hand-held camerawork so that the audience can feel close and are able to connect with the song.
- Wasn’t a flashy video
The class thought that the fact the video was not to flashy worked well with the video as the video not being to flashy connected to the songs meaning. In our music video we are going to make sure that our video is not to theatrical and that it always connects to our song's meanings.
- Shows the ghetto culture lack of jobs and money
The class liked the fact that the video focused on a character and his life in the ghetto neighborhood and how much temptation there is for him to join gangs, they also showed people who are very poor living off rubbish bags emphasizing the poverty in these areas they also filmed in very run down areas giving that sense of poverty. in our video we are going to make sure that we connect with meaning of the song not just by performance but with our camerawork and our chosen locations.
- Shootings and gangs
- Parents stereotypically follow straight and narrow. Son with a lot of temptation around him mum trying to keep him away from that.
In the video the mum is given the stereotypical role of being innocent and pure and trying to lead her son down the right path as there is so much temptation around him this is seen when he leaves his house as there are gangs everywhere there are scenes of drug use all around and the mum character is represented as trying to stop him from going down this path.
- Strong memorable video.
Overall, the feedback we received from the class was that they wanted a music video that conveyed a strong message, was very memorable but also something that felt similar and looked like a music video. As the Director, writer and producer for our group I am going to incorporate this feedback into our ideas. For example the song we have chosen is about being rich but coming from a very poor background and not always living as lavishly as they do know, as the director I feel it is my job to make sure the music video shows what it is like to live in both sides of the money scale and what it is like to be rich and poor as this has been highlighted upon by our audience during the analysis of our influential video.
I am also going to make sure that while I am portraying the feeling of being poor in our music videos I am going to be consistently monitoring whether it is moving further away from being a music video and it is starting to become like a drama , as our audience has highlighted they want the music video to feel like a music video straight from the beginning and my aim as the director is to make sure that while poverty is being portrayed in the video due to its links with the song the video does not become more like a drama as our audience has highlighted this as a weakness.
